CMS has released the FY 2027 SNF PPS Final Rule, effective October 1, 2026. While the SNF Prospective Payment System Final Rule is scheduled for publication through Federal Register on July 31, 2026, an unpublished version is available for download in the interim.
Key updates include:
Medicare Payment Update: CMS finalized a 2.4% net Medicare payment increase for FY 2027, representing an estimated $882.7 million increase in aggregate SNF payments.

SNF QRP Updates:
- Two COVID-19 vaccination measures will be removed beginning with FY 2028.
- QRP data submission deadlines will move earlier beginning with FY 2029, requiring MDS data submission by the 15th day of the second month following each quarter.
- MDS submission requirements will expand to include all residents receiving covered skilled care, regardless of payer, beginning with FY 2031.
SNF VBP: CMS finalized performance standards for the FY 2029 and FY 2030 program years and updated MDS review timelines to align with the revised QRP submission schedule.
The Point Is: The FY 2027 Final Rule introduces relatively few immediate changes, allowing providers to focus on preparing for future reporting requirements rather than significant reimbursement changes. SNF teams should continue prioritizing accurate MDS coding, documentation, and timely submissions while planning for earlier QRP deadlines and expanded all-payer MDS reporting.
