In this episode, we discuss treating the acute, newly diagnosed COVID patient in your SNF/LTC setting. Make sure to complete a comprehensive assessment of cardiopulmonary function before, during, and after activities to rule out the following common issues identified with this population: shortness of breath, asymptomatic hypoxia, hypotension, lowered ejection fraction.

Respiratory muscle weakness is a very common impairment and can easily be addressed using the following exercise program:

Diaphragmatic breathing exercise:

Lie on your back with knees bent. Put a pillow under knees for support if needed
Place one hand on belly below rib cage.
Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of three. Belly will rise. “Smell the roses”
Tighten/flatten stomach muscles and exhale for a count of six through pursed lips. Belly will fall. “Blow out the candles”
